The GNAT, since the 1970s, has embarked on a variety of economic and welfare services for its members. Through a bilateral relationship with the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF) in the late 1960s, the GNAT started the establishment of Credit Unions across the Country. Currently, there are hundreds of Teacher Credit Unions across the country which serve as reliable sources of soft loans for members. We also set up the Teachers Fund in 1998 to supplement members’ pensions and grant them loans to build their own houses, purchase vehicles and run businesses. The Teachers Fund again provides group solidarity insurance for members against death or permanent disability.
Members are also paid retirement benefits as well as Death benefits. Our members, their spouses and children are entitled to Cancer treatment at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre in Accra. Our members are given yearly souvenirs, while our hostel facilities across the country are patronized by them, at discounted rates.
